Girlstown |
| |
Members of GFWC MI established Girlstown in 1958 in Belleville, Michigan. The first facility was named Loch Rio, a residential facility for girls who are wards of the court. Through the years Girlstown has expanded to facilitate transitional care, and placement in foster homes for children. Counseli ng is given for children and families. Education is provided through the public school system. Physically, Girlstown has grown with a second building for living and a sizeable expansion of Loch Rio. Modernization was completed in 2001 of the kitchen and bath facilities. A memorial garden and landscaping were completed in 2002 in dedication to Jan vanBlaricom one of the early members to establish this service care. The dedication to this non-profit operation creates a foundation to continue well into the next century. Continued love for our residents makes for building and changing the world for many young people.

Interlochen |

The Interlochen Arts Academy is an independent co-educational boarding school for students in grades 9-12, with a post-graduate year available. It also provides camps for the summer learning. Committed to the arts and academics, the Academy provides students with pre-professional training in the arts along with a rigorous college-preparatory education.
GFWC MI first supported the National Music Camp at Interlochen in 1933. At that time the State President, Mrs. Prout, reported that districts started a fund for Interlochen Scholarships, entitling a student to a summer's work at the famous High School Orchestra and Band Camp.
During the 1943-45 Administration, President Estell Seeber reported: " The Art Building at Interlochen, sponsored by the Federation appealed greatly to the women whose prime interest is the welfare and development of the youth of our country".
Interlochen has stood as a symbol of opportunity for those young people whose tendencies show a definate aptitude for music and art. The GFWC MI board voted to make this a state project. The building was dedicated in 1946 and presented to the National Music Camp at Interlochen for the Fine Arts Building to stand as a fine contribution to education by the GFWC MI clubs. |
